Studio Equipment

Soft Box
This defuses light and creates a soft indirect light. It also softens shadows.

Beauty Dish
The Beauty Dish eliminates hot spots and harsh shadows. It makes the skin look more flattering by softening tones and the light intensity.

Umbrella
Diffuses light by softening the lighting on the image. Adds a soft glow it can soften shadows or eliminate them all together. It can be used for lighting backgrounds and/or subjects.

Snoot
The snoot lets out a single light of beam of light and prevents light spill.

Honeycomb
This narrows the beam of light to a circle with soft edges. Also it softens the light and only weakly eliminates your subject.

Safety In The Studio

There are many Hazards in a studio involving lights, wires and other equipment....

  • Be Aware of where the wires are in the studio and take caution when around them so you don't trip.

  • Be careful when adding or removing fixtures from lights because they may still be very hot and you may burn yourself.

  • Don't run in the studio because you may fall and hurt yourself plus you may knock over some equipment and damage them.

  • Make sure your models don't step too far back or they may fall and hurt themselves plus pull down your back drop.

  • Make sure no one is eating or drinking in the studio. if they spill liquids onto your equipment they may be damaged or food may be trampled into your back drop.

Our FUN Assignment

Just like Gilbert and George we had to work together for this assignment, we had to work in a group of 7 and create a large work of art. Our ideas changed and developed, we got ideas from books and the Internet.
Some of our ideas were

  • stereotypes
  • showing how older people see younger people
  • showing changes in times
  • fun
Our final idea is fun, this is shown by images of objects that we find fun or that we did when we were younger, fun places and by portraits of us having fun.
It was then suggested that we use a word like "us" or "me" but then it was pointed out that it may be too personal if we use words like that so we voted for "fun" .
We used 65 frames (size 6 x 4), with 13 frames across and 5 frames down. All the images will be black & white, however we're going to create the word FUN using images in 3 different colours,"F" in red "U" in yellow and "N" in blue.
We set deadlines for our group, these were:

  1. Monday and Tuesday shoot the images
  2. Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday edit
  3. Thursday print, frame and put on the wall.
We met our deadlines and I think it looks really good and the word FUN stands out a lot. Here are some images of our work that are now up in college.

This is a picture of both groups artwork together, the one on the left is our FUN themed project and the one on the right if the other groups 80's project.
